About Me 🚀
Hello, my name is Zara and I'm a 3rd year medical student at the University of Leeds. I'm really enjoying my time at medical school so far - my favourite thing to learn about has been renal medicine, and a tutorial I always look forward to is my weekly medical ethics group discussion!
So far I've enjoyed most of the departments I've participated in on placement, but surgery intrigues me most, so this year I've taken up a role as the Pre-Clinical representative for Cutting Edge, Leeds' surgery society.
Outside of academics, I play netball, go to the gym, and love cooking and baking. My most recent summer project was cooking a dish from every country around the world! Leeds is a great place to be a student, and the past year I've had a blast making friends across a variety of courses, exploring hidden gems in the city, and gaining new skills and hobbies - this year I'm planning on joining the university women's rugby society, and doing a hiking trip to the Yorkshire Dales.
I'm also secretary of the Leeds Kashmiri Society, and am looking forward to educating other students about the history of Kashmir and the conflict its people has faced, which is an issue close to my heart.
I've set up food drives and charity bake sales in the past to help the people of Kashmir during the floods and pandemic. I have years of tutoring experience and am always eager to help students with their learning, especially supporting aspiring medics to achieve their dream!
Medicine is a noble profession and I love to see the passion we all share for it - I'm excited to help you all through the daunting but achievable application process.
Teaching Experience 📝
I have 3 years of experience tutoring GCSE maths face-to-face at both foundation and higher levels, in which I created my own lesson plans based on assessments of my students progress and speaking to them openly about which topics they felt they needed support in.
I covered a wide range of subjects including Maths, English, Reading, and Science. This experience improved my patience and adaptability as young students are often unpredicatable and have shorter attention spans. This required creativity and made me learnt to teach in a fun and lighthearted manner to maintain the attention of the children.
During Sixth Form, I took up the role of being a student mentor, which involved creating Loom videos teaching varying topics in GCSE Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Food & Nutrition. I created videos, animations and PowerPoints to teach subject matter, and learnt to use the Loom screenrecording platform, then uploading the videos onto a server to make them accessible to all GCSE students.
This virtual teaching style was fun and I enjoyed using different softwares to make unique, short and snappy videos. Since entering medical school, I have become a tutor with The Armitage Foundation. I have done online webinars as well as in person events in schools in Leeds and surrounding areas, working with students from Year 7 to Year 12. I have worked with classrooms of children to get them engaged in medical topics, teaching them science and helping them broaden their understanding of medicine.
In this role I have gained an insight into classroom-style teaching, as well as handling large groups of students.Additionally, I have spent a year virtually mentoring aspiring medical students in Year 12. I have reviewed personal statements for them, given them strategic application advice based on their grades, contextual information and admissions tests, as well as coached them on how to conquer the UCAT.
Recently in the build up to their university applications, I have started working on their interview technique, giving them short mock interviews and helping to improve their confidence and interview technique.
