GCSE Maths Tutor

For the 2021/2022 academic year I had the privilege of tutoring a student in GCSE mathematics. I learned how important it is to express confidence in my student; often through through commendation but sometimes tacitly communicating this confidence by patiently waiting for them to generate ideas. Simply trying to approach a question starts the engines of problem solving. I also learned that the best way to teach is through questions. Allow the student to get things wrong. Show them why the answer should be this instead of that. This helps the student to grasp the concept from first principles.

Teaching is very rewarding because as I explained concepts, I deepened my understanding of them. In some cases I gained new insights into how to approach and solve problems. Fundamentally understanding concepts and problem solving is greatly satisfying. When I teach, I am able to help students find the same exquisite joy in figuring something out. The change in countenance of a student when something "clicks" is priceless. Moreover, there is a sense of moral satisfaction when I help students achieve their academic potential.

I thoroughly enjoy reading medicine. This is only possible because of the enthusiastic and skilled teachers that helped me to unlock my potential. It seems only right that I help others to do the same.

As a student mentor, I had the opportunity to teach many aspiring medical students about each stage of the medicine application process; from personal statements to interview preparations.

Throughout my undergraduate medical education, I have seized opportunities to teach previous years key concepts in taught modules in preparation for end of year exams.
